LEO
TOLSTOY
Leo
Tolstoy hated washing his car.
In
a letter dated 1881, the count wrote:
“I
bought this new LeBaron; I wish I hadn’t.
It
is totally white and it shows all the dirt.”
In
another letter from 1881, he wrote:
“I
sold the son of a bitch and bought a horse.
The
peasants don’t refuse to wash her
When
I let the children ride around on her.”
Despite
his conviction in these letters,
We
know that Tolstoy had his doubts.
His
wife wrote to her sister in Minsk,
“After
he sold the car, Leo was different.”
“He
makes vroom vroom noises in
his room,”
She
wrote in another letter. “I worry about him.
He
tells me he is planning his greatest novel,
But
I know he is only thinking about the car.”
